2008 Clio Campus (they kept selling the old mk2 clio as the campus alongside the newer mk3). Service history, 27k miles and in okay shape. The fact its done such a low mileage seems to have affected it since everything feels stuck or gummed up.

Throttle and clutch cables for example and the engine feels ponderous. Its the same 1.2 as my twingo but the clio feels ten times less willing to rev and is generally slower. Hopefully once it gets some use itll run in and get back to how it should be. Other than that it seems a decent enough car. Cost us £1450.

Nice! my sister had a Mark 2 phase 2 Clio for a few years. Good little cars. Only thing I will say is the airbag light is a little bit temperamental, but is cured by doing a dash reset which is very easy.

Seems like your household is becoming home to small black Renaults now

Aye its a decent little car. I probably wouldve tried to get up to a mk3 instead but it wasnt my decision and they liked this one which is fair enough.

Yeah we have all black cars now. Not even by choice i didnt want a black twingo i just couldnt find a blue one in my price range haha.

Ar, yes. The Campus. Like any other Mark 2 Phase 2, but had the licence plate relocated to the rear bumper from the tailgate.

I remember years ago when it seemed everyone had one of these. Girls had the 5 door and boys had the 3 door, again, so it seemed.

Yeah pretty much. It feels like a car that was first released in the 90s for sure. Not that its a bad car at all but it feels its age.

Could the difference in performance just be weight?

I wouldnt imagine so, i think theyre fairly similar weight wise.

Oh I assumed it was a much bigger car.

I just checked and the weight is identical. The clio is actually much more cramped inside, not sure what the actual dimensional differences are.

Fun fact: The Clio II and Twingo II, share more than just an engine, they share the same platform, with roughly the same dimensions, though the Twingo has a wider track IIRC, making for better handling of course!

Is the engine in the Campus the older 1.2 8v or the newer 1.2 16v? Because that could cause a difference in responsiveness. Though I must say my 16v Twingo is quite happy between 3-6k revs. Your Twingo is the 8v version, right?

Yeah they do share a platform, you wouldnt tell from driving them both mind, such different feeling cars.

Its the old 8v like my twingo, no fancy 16v engines for us haha. My twingo is really rev happy whereas this clio just doesnt like to pick up and feels even more underpowered.

Probably just driven by some granny in the past, explains the low mileage too. I think a proper re-breaking-in ought to solve it, my Twingo was also more lazy when I got it with 13k kms, however it’s way happier now at 55555 kms.

Have you already checked the state of the airfilter btw? Maybe it hasn’t been changed due to the low mileage, and it could be choking the airflow.

EDIT: the gear ratios could also be different, however since the weight is similar, I don’t think this is likely.

I’ve always thought that buying low mileage cars was a bad idea (until you get to older ones where they would have covered 300k miles if used at a steady rate each year).

Cars need to be regularly used to keep everything in working order, and if it’s low mileage it’s less likely that wear items will have been changed on schedule and they will have deteriorated due to time.

As an aside, does this mean that the E36 compact is yours to play around with and your parents won't need it?

Huh. To an American it seems weird for a company to make two small hatchbacks that are roughly the same size.

I agree on the mileage thing, something thats been used regularly and properly maintained is better than these super low mile things.

It does mean that yes, in fact ive just started test fitting the new panels before i have to head off to work. Surprisingly not that wonky for an aftermarket panel.

Kinja'd!!!

Will need some work and a touch of filler though.

Yeah seems that way, we bought it off a student who barely used it and it only covered 13k in the 4 years before she bought it.

Air filter was pretty clean.

The campus went out of production not too long after the twingo went on sale to be fair. It was also a bit cheaper, still is fairly odd though i agree.

Nice! If I still had my old E36 you could have had the panels off that as it was the same colour.

Is there a reason you went for aftermarket panels with a respray compared to eBay panels in the right colour? I managed to get my replacement ones from a scrappy after I pranged it if memory serves me right :)

It was really hard to find cheap 2nd hand panels in good enough shape, I ended up only paying 28 quid a side for these. Plus i wanted to break out my new spray gun haha.

Huh, maybe I lucked out with mine.

£28 for a wing is an absolute steal though! Considering that it’s well over £200 for a Spitfire wing!

New spray gun? Cool :) what setup have you got. and have you done any spraying before?

Just a 50l compressor and a half decent draper gun. Enough for spraying small panels.

Ive done a lot with spray cans and a fair bit on a mates compressor. Im no expert by any means but i can get a smooth finish with no runs.

Very nice :) I’ve done a couple of spray jobs now but still haven’t quite got the knack of it.

Will you be using cellulose stuff? We tend to use cyanoacrylate which you need a breather mask for.

Havent had the paint mixed yet but i have a good quality gas mask either way.

Kinja'd!!!0

Gotcha. Unless you've got a proper breathing mask plumbed into a compressor with an inlet somewhere well away from where you're spraying I'd steer well clear of cyanoacrylates. Basically they're based on cyanide compounds and really fuck up your lungs if you breathe them in in any quantity. Standard breather masks aren't good enough to filter them out. Scary stuff, but makes for durable paint...

In that case ill avoid those kinds of paint. Its a good mask but not the kind with an inlet and outlet. That said i just checked the website for the guy and he says he only sells cyanoacrylates on request to order. Assume his standard paints dont use it.

Ah good stuff. Most paint is fine and will actually just give you a mild high, but some paint is nasty (but oddly will probably still give you a high)...
